Mantua and Sabbioneta are World Heritage Sites
|
In Quebec city, Canada, at the annual meeting of the UN Commission of Unesco, the proposal of adding these two Mantuan cities in the list of sites that need to be safeguarded has been welcomed since they represent the maximum expression of human genius that have to be passed on to posterity in all their integrity, with all their artistic and cultural jewels. The Commission gave as justification for this acknowledgment the following reasons: «These two cities represent the foremost examples of the two most emblematic methods of Renaissance urban planning, the evolutionary and the constitutive ones. As such, they have represented important reference points for most urban planning experiences that followed, until the modern age». Nine Mantuan tourist sites have been awarded today with the "Orang flag", the prestigious tourism acknowledgment of the Italian Touring Club. The "Orange flag" is a label of tourist and environmental quality that, according to very strict parameters, the Italian Touring Club assigns to those sites with less than 15.000 inhabitants in the hinterland that not only offer a valuable historic, cultural and environmental heritage but also quality tourist services to their tourists. Among these nine sites, two are in the Mantuan area: Castellaro Lagusello, hamlet of Monzambano, and Sabbioneta. |
